I love love love for my photography to have some purpose, and to be able to give families a gift of capturing moments in their lives. This summer I am so excited to be able to be a small part of an amazing organization, Girl Talk.
Girl Talk (www.mygirltalk.org) is an international non-profit peer-to-peer mentoring program with a very simple premise: high school girls mentor middle school girls to help them deal with the issues they face during their formative early teenage years. Our mission is to help young teenaged girls build self-esteem, develop leadership skills and recognize the value of community service.
Meet Ryann, who has been a part of Girl Talk for a few years, and read her amazing story below!
"I'm Ryann, and I'll be a senior at Allatoona High School in the fall. I play Lacrosse for my school, I'm on student government, and I have an amazing boyfriend (who I call "bubby"), Right now I'm involved in a very heated Nerf Gun war with 20 of my friends (lol so 8th grade, right?!). (continued below)
I love spending my time surrounded by people, doing new and exciting things, or helping others. A few years ago, my sister, Kendall, was having a tough time in school. She couldn't quite manage the drama and mean girls.
We set out to find something that would help her, and luckily we stumbled upon Girl Talk. Haley, the founder, was having a book signing a couple weeks out at KSU and we went. Listening to Haley tell her story and that she wanted to help young girls fascinated me.
Later that month we signed up for Girl Talks Project Inside Out (the summer camp). Kendall wasn't old enough to be a camper but I was sure to bring home all the info I learned from being a counselor.
That summer, I knew Girl Talk was going to be a huge part of my life. Every Summer, for the past 4 years, I have been a camp counselor, and the past 3, Kendall has been a camper.
This summer I was chosen to be head co-counslor, with one of my good friends Rachel McGovern. Two years ago, I started a chapter at my middle school.
Girl Talk is about creating a safe place where girls can feel welcomed, loved, and celebrated for who they are. We strive to show unconditional love 24/7 and make sure girls know how to handle middle school and all the bad drama and bullying that comes with it.
With out Girl Talk, Kendall wouldn't have found the perfect way to handle the mean girls. I wouldn't have found the perfect leadership opportunities and the bestest of friends.
I'm so thankful to have been apart of Girl Talk and I hope that everyone can be as touched by them as my family was."
