My graduate school education told me NOT to quote wikipedia so because I'm such a rebel, I'm going to here:
"Lifestyle photography is a style of portrait/people photography which aims to capture and document real-life events, situations, or milestones in an artistic manner and the art of the everyday."
Simple enough! Think opposite of Olan Mills and JCPenney 1980's style portraits.
When I meet you for your session, I won't have tons of equipment. It's usually just me and a camera. I try to blend into the background and let you do your family thing. I don't give a ton of instruction. I want you to feel at ease and be yourself. That means I WANT your kids to be silly, creative, goofy, and even cry if that's something that they do sometimes. Sure, the posed photos make for "pretty pictures" and everyone will think you're a happy little family. But what I want to provide you is photos that make you think "wow, my child is beautiful on the inside and out."
